DIAMOND BUYING GUIDE
Everything you need to choose the right diamond ring with confidence.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT DIAMOND RING
Choosing a diamond ring becomes much easier when you break the process into a few important decisions.
Start with a comfortable budget, then consider the diamond shape and size, ring style, gold color and ring size that best suit your preferences. Finally, make sure your diamond is independently certified so you know exactly what you are purchasing.
There is no single perfect ring for everyone. The goal is to bring each of these elements together to create a ring that feels right for you.
START WITH YOUR BUDGET
Setting a comfortable budget is the best place to begin. It gives you a clear framework for choosing the diamond size, shape and ring design that are right for you.
Rather than focusing on a single specification, think about the finished ring as a whole. Your budget can be balanced between the center diamond and the setting to create the appearance you want.
Once your budget is established, the rest of the selection process becomes much simpler.
CHOOSE YOUR DIAMOND SHAPE
Shape is one of the most personal decisions when choosing a diamond ring and has a major influence on its overall character.
Round offers timeless brilliance, while oval, pear and marquise create an elegant elongated appearance. Emerald and Asscher offer clean, geometric lines, while radiant, cushion and princess diamonds bring their own distinctive balance of shape and sparkle.
Choose the shape you are naturally drawn to - there is no single right answer.
CHOOSE YOUR DIAMOND SIZE
Carat refers to a diamond’s weight, while its measurements in millimeters determine its physical dimensions.
When choosing a center stone, consider how much presence you would like the diamond to have on the hand. A larger carat weight creates a more prominent look, while a smaller diamond can offer a more delicate and understated appearance.
Shape also influences how large a diamond appears, which is why it is helpful to consider both carat weight and visual size when making your choice.
CHOOSE YOUR GOLD COLOR
The color of the metal can completely change the character of the finished ring.
White gold creates a clean, contemporary appearance that blends naturally with the brilliance of the diamond. Yellow gold offers a warmer, classic contrast, while rose gold introduces a softer and more distinctive tone.
There is no better or worse choice - gold color is primarily about personal preference and how you want your finished ring to look.
At Yatkovski, our rings are available in 14K and 18K yellow, white and rose gold.
FIND YOUR RING SIZE
The correct ring size ensures your ring feels secure and comfortable when worn.
Ring sizes can vary between international sizing systems, so it is important to measure carefully rather than relying on an estimate. An existing ring that fits correctly can also be used to determine the appropriate size.
If you are unsure, our Ring Size Guide explains how to measure your finger or an existing ring and convert between international sizes.
CHECK THE DIAMOND CERTIFICATE
Your diamond should be accompanied by an independent grading report that confirms its characteristics.
An IGI grading report provides important information about the diamond, including its carat weight, color, clarity, measurements and grading details.
The report number can also be matched to the microscopic laser inscription on the diamond, providing an additional way to verify that the stone corresponds with its certificate.
At Yatkovski, our certified center diamonds are independently graded by IGI.
CONSIDER THE COMPLETE RING
A beautiful ring is about more than the center diamond alone.
The diamond shape, size, setting, band proportions and metal color all work together to determine the appearance of the finished piece.
Rather than choosing each element independently, consider how they complement one another. A well-balanced design allows the center diamond to remain the focus while every detail of the setting contributes to the finished ring.
Ultimately, the right ring is the combination that looks and feels right to you.
