UNDERSTANDING THE 4Cs OF DIAMONDS
Cut, color, clarity and carat weight are the four key characteristics used to understand and evaluate a diamond. Learn what each one means and how they work together to influence a diamond’s beauty and quality.
WHAT ARE THE 4Cs?
The 4Cs - Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat - are the four key characteristics used to evaluate and describe a diamond.
Each one plays a different role in a diamond’s appearance and quality. Understanding how they work together can help you choose the diamond that is right for you.
CUT
Diamond cut describes how precisely a diamond’s facets, proportions and angles have been crafted. It plays a major role in how effectively the diamond interacts with light and therefore how bright, brilliant and lively it appears.
A beautifully cut diamond can appear more brilliant even when compared with another diamond of similar color, clarity and carat weight.
WHY DIAMOND CUT MATTERS
When light enters a well-cut diamond, its proportions help direct that light through the stone and back toward the viewer. This creates the brightness, fire and sparkle associated with a beautiful diamond.
If proportions are too shallow or too deep, more light can escape instead of returning through the top of the diamond.
Cut should not be confused with diamond shape. Round, oval, pear and emerald are shapes; cut describes the quality of the diamond’s proportions and finish.
At Yatkovski, we prioritize diamonds with excellent craftsmanship and carefully evaluate their overall appearance, not simply the grade written on a report.
COLOR
Diamond color grading evaluates how colorless a white diamond appears. The internationally recognized scale runs from D, representing the highest degree of colorlessness, through Z, where increasingly noticeable warm tones are present. The differences between neighboring grades can be extremely subtle, particularly when viewed without comparison stones.
UNDERSTANDING DIAMOND COLOR
For white diamonds, less visible body color generally results in a higher color grade. Grades D, E and F are considered within the colorless range, while subsequent grades gradually display more warmth.
However, color should always be considered together with the diamond’s shape, size, setting and metal color. Different diamond shapes can display color differently, and the surrounding jewelry can also influence how color is perceived.
At Yatkovski, our standard for fine jewelry begins at E color, allowing us to maintain a consistently bright and colorless appearance across our diamond selection.
CLARITY
Diamond clarity evaluates the presence of internal characteristics, known as inclusions, and external characteristics, known as blemishes.
Diamonds are examined under magnification to determine their clarity grade based on factors including the size, number, position and visibility of these characteristics.
WHAT DOES CLARITY REALLY MEAN?
Clarity describes the presence of tiny internal or surface characteristics that are evaluated by gemologists under magnification.
At Yatkovski, we work with VVS2 to VS1 clarity lab-grown diamonds, selected to maintain a clean, refined appearance and a consistently high standard across our jewelry.
Within these clarity grades, characteristics are typically difficult to see without magnification. This allows the beauty, brilliance and overall appearance of the diamond to remain the focus.
Every diamond is carefully selected not only for its clarity grade, but for how it actually looks - because the certificate tells us the grade, but the diamond itself determines our selection.
CARAT
Carat is a measurement of a diamond’s weight, not its physical dimensions. One carat equals 200 milligrams.
While larger diamonds generally weigh more, two diamonds with the same carat weight can appear different in size depending on their shape, proportions and how their weight is distributed.
CARAT WEIGHT AND DIAMOND SIZE
Carat weight is often associated with diamond size, but the two are not exactly the same.
A diamond’s visible dimensions are influenced by its shape and proportions. A well-proportioned diamond may present its weight differently from a deeper-cut stone of exactly the same carat weight.
Different shapes also create different visual impressions. For example, elongated shapes such as oval, pear and marquise diamonds can appear larger across the finger than some other diamonds of similar weight.
For this reason, we recommend considering carat weight, measurements, proportions and shape together rather than choosing a diamond based only on the carat number.
ROUND DIAMOND SIZE GUIDE
For round diamonds, size in millimeters refers to the diameter of the diamond when viewed from above.
The chart shows the approximate diameter associated with different carat weights, making it easier to understand how a diamond’s physical size changes as its weight increases.
For example, a 1.00 ct round diamond measures approximately 6.4-6.5 mm, while a 2.00 ct round diamond measures approximately 8.1 mm.
These measurements are approximate, as the exact diameter can vary slightly depending on the diamond’s cut and proportions.
FIND THE DIAMOND THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU
The 4Cs provide the foundation, but a beautiful diamond is about how those qualities come together.
At Yatkovski, we carefully select diamonds for their overall beauty, proportions and brilliance, helping you choose a diamond that looks exceptional beyond its grading report.
